What to do after the survey

What next?

After you have done your survey there are more things you can do.

The best way of getting businesses to improve their access is to talk to them or send them a letter telling them what their access is like.

If you want to send a letter, please see the advice on Letters and Action Cards section to your left. If you want to meet and talk with the manager of the business, here are some helpful hints to get you started.

Planning your meeting

  • Before the meeting think of ways that the business could make their access better. What changes could they make? For more information on the changes busineses should make and the Equality Act 2010, read this guide to your rights when buying goods and services.
  • When planning your meeting, tell the person you are meeting your access needs so they can make sure you can access the meeting venue. It will also help get the manager thinking of how to improve their access before you meet.

Things to take to your meeting

  • Your access survey
  • An Action Card
  • Download an information sheet for businesses from the bottom of this page

At your meeting

Experienced campaigner Barry from Essex suggests, ‘ think about what they want and then what you want to happen. Services want customers and you want to use them so how can you both win?.'

Talking about access

  • You can start by talking about why access s important to disabled people. Some businesses will not know how important good access is.Tell them what you found when you did your access survey. It is important to talk about what they need to change to have good access as well as what they are doing wrong.
  • You can tell the business that the Equality Act 2010 says that businesses should make sure everyone can use them. Big businesses have to do more to make sure everyone can access them, as they have more money. You can find out more about the changes businesses should make at www.actionforaccess/businesses. It would be helpful if you could print thsi information and take it with you.

Make sure you tell them that good access is not just the law but means lots more people can spend their money there!

Talking about the campaign

You can tell the that;

Action for Access is the campaign for an accessible UK. It provides the tools and support for campaigners and businesses to work together to improve access for disabled people and everyone affected by access barriers. It involves campaigners going out and surveying access in their loacl area and adding their results to the website so that everyone can see them.

Often it onley takes a small change to help improve access but it will make a big difference to your disabled customers and improve the overall service you provide.

the results of this surevy and any points on how you will be improving your access will be shown on the website www.actionforaccess.org

Asking them to take Action for Access

Ask them if they can fill out the Action Card while you are there and put it in their window.

If they don't fill out the Action Card at the meeting, remember to aks when and how you will hear back about what they will be doing to improve access.

You could also arrange a date to come back and see the improvements.
